With the advent of NGN's (Next Generation Networks) such as BT's out 21CN (21st Century Network) both public and private networks are facing the most radical change since Sir Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The next-generation network seamlessly blends the PSTN and the public switched data network (PSDN), creating a single multi-service network. Rather than large, centralized, proprietary switch infrastructures, this next-generation architecture pushes central-office (CO) functionality to the edge of the network.
